Mentoring

Do you want to gain experience and knowledge about working with children outdoors? With my mentoring programs you will learn my methods by observing and working alongside me as we go about our Outside School adventures. You will come with us during the same hours and days that we are in school and receive:

  • Hands-on experience and knowledge,

  • A journal for note-taking, observations, and reflections,

  • Ability to do your research if you are a student,

  • Certificate of completion with hours noted,

  • Perhaps most importantly, you will also gain access. We’ll have time to chat organically as each school day goes on. Plus, beginning the month of your mentorship and continuing through another eleven months, we will schedule phone and/or in-person meetings for up to one hour per month to discuss any topics you wish, whether that’s something you’ve observed while working alongside me, tips and tricks of the trade, or anything else.

I have two mentoring programs available, both based on my teaching values of creating long term relationships:

Program 1: “Seasons”

One week in each season of the year. Choose one school week in each time period (refer to the first Outside School page and the link to the school calendar), a total of 14 days:

Spring: March or April

Summer: Second, third, or fourth week of Summer Camp

Fall: October or November

Winter: December or February

Program 2 “Immersion”

One full month of the school year. Choose one of the following months during the Outside School year (refer to the first Outside School page and the link to the school calendar), a total of 12 days:

March, May, or October

Requirements

  • Read and agree to the entire Outside School front page, handbook, and individual program pages, including cancellation and refund information. Adults and children alike have the same requirements,

  • In-service teachers must be currently working in or taking a sabbatical from traditional schools anywhere,

  • Pre-service teachers must have completed at least 12 early childhood education units or one semester of applicable baccalaureate or graduate programs anywhere,

  • Pre- or in-service forest school or other alternative education program educators must be currently working outside a 15 mile radius of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park,

  • Everyone who participates in the program must agree to not open an outdoor or alternative education program within a 15 mile radius of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park within five years of their last day of in-person participation,

  • I ask that if you share any aspects of the program (e.g. social media, articles, and/or research), that you share that with me as well. I will promote your work as I see fit,

  • I recommend submitting your application materials a month or more before your proposed start date to allow time for the Department of Justice to review your fingerprints.

How to Apply

  • Ensure you’ve reviewed the school’s calendar linked on the first page, and that the program works for you.

  • Ensure you’ve thoroughly examined the handbook, and that Outside School will suit your needs.

  • Fill out the application in its entirety, completing all fields and electronically signing and dating it.

  • Also provide:

    1. A copy of your immunization records, including up to date COVID and flu vaccinations and boosters. (Please note that, above and beyond what I require for students, if I am wearing a mask, you will also be required to wear a mask.) For more information visit www.shotsforschool.org,

    2. A tubucerlosis clearance completed within six months prior to your proposed start date,

    3. Your CV or resume; making sure you meet minimum requirements outlined above.

  • Your application is not complete, and your space is not reserved, until you have sent tuition as well- see the section below. Send via email to teachoutside@gmail.com or via snail mail: Outside School, P.O. Box 6490, Albany, CA 94706. I check my P.O. box weekly.

  • I will send you a Department of Justice fingerprint request form as soon as possible after you’ve submitted all the required paperwork and payment. The fingerprinting will cost additional money, and you are responsible for those fees.

  • I will send you confirmation of your program once I’ve received fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice.
